Fife Lake Cemetery Update:
You may have noticed the new retaining wall at the west drive into the cemetery. The gray color for the decorative blocks was picked by the Cemetery Committee because it compliments the gray tombstones. Sexton Kelley has straightened many of the older stones in this area. Also, mulch has been added to the soil which will improve this area over time. A new storage building was purchased which is next to the older building. All cemetery equipment is now able to be stored on-site which is a great convenience. An area has been cleared to the west for parking, benches will be placed to overlook the marsh for use by nature lovers or those who just want to relax for a few minutes. Also, a split rail fence will be placed along the marsh with a silt liner at the bottom. All work has been approved by the DEQ and the G.T. County Soil Erosion Department. The fence painting is now completed. Thanks to Yvonne and Kate for doing this tedious, but necessary job.
Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians awarded Fife Lake Township $20,000 to be put with a $5,000 local match for improvements to our boat launch on the south end of Fife Lake. Improvements will include an improved boat launch pad with a small dock to help guide your boat in and out of the lake; upgrades to the parking lot; a fish cleaning station, a picnic table, a seasonal porta john; and most important a vegetation coil to control soil line erosion. We hope to complete this project this fall, if you questions please contact Terry Street (clerk) or John Kelley (groundskeeper). We are so thankful to the Grand Traverse Band for this generous 2% gift.
Our new security system seems to be working well, we thank all of you for being patient with this new addition to our township. We appreciate the $5,000 grant from PAR Plan, our insurance provider.
